Trenching in sand means shoring, because the walls will not stand up, and near the water it can mean pumping too. A liner cured inside the existing pipe avoids both.

Most people assume sand is the easy stuff to dig, and at the surface it is. The problem starts as soon as the trench gets deep enough to matter.
Sand will not hold a vertical face. Clay and shale largely stand up on their own to a sensible depth, which is why a trench out west is a neat slot. Dig the same slot in sand and the walls run in as you go, so anything beyond shallow has to be shored or battered back at an angle. Both mean a far wider excavation than the pipe needs, and on a small beachside block that is frequently most of the yard.
Close to the water there is a second issue. A trench that reaches below the water table begins filling while you work, which adds dewatering to the job. It does not affect every property and it is not a reason for alarm, but it is a genuine cost that belongs in an excavation quote and is very often missing from one.
Lining avoids both, because nothing goes below the surface at all. The repair happens from inside the pipe, through an access point that already exists.


Check whether the number includes shoring and reinstatement. In sand those are not optional extras, and they are usually where a dig quote and a dig invoice diverge.
A resin-saturated liner goes into the damaged section, is inflated against the existing pipe wall and cures hard. The result is a continuous jointless pipe inside the old one, slightly smaller in bore and considerably smoother, so flow usually improves.
The old pipe is not removed. It becomes the outer shell, which is why nothing above ground has to be lifted and why the work is possible in material a trench struggles in.
This is the whole argument in one sentence. Excavating sand beyond shallow depth requires either shoring or battering the sides back, because the material simply runs.
The consequence is that the hole is far wider than the pipe, and on a typical beachside block that is a large proportion of the available yard. Reinstating it is not raking soil back over: it is re-establishing levels, paving, planting or whatever was there.
On low-lying ground near the beach, a deep trench can reach groundwater and begin filling as it is dug. That adds pumping to the job for as long as the trench is open.
Not every property is affected, and we will tell you honestly whether yours is likely to be. What matters is that an excavation quote which does not mention it has probably not considered it, and that is the kind of omission that turns into a variation later.
Where the camera shows one bad joint in an otherwise sound pipe, a patch liner over that spot is the proportionate repair at a fraction of a full run.
A full reline earns its price when the footage shows the whole length going: multiple open joints, roots at several points, or a pipe beginning to deform. The footage shows you which one you have, rather than us asserting it.
Shallow, close to an existing access point, under open lawn, in dry sand: dig it. Sand is quick to move at that depth and reinstating turf is trivial. We will say so and lose the bigger job.
It flips the moment the fault is deep, under a path or slab, near the water table, or under anything that would need rebuilding. That is when the liner stops being the alternative and starts being the sensible answer.

When the pipe has collapsed, when it has deformed too far for a liner to seat, or when the real fault is fall rather than sealing. And genuinely, where the damage is shallow, close to an access point and under an open lawn, digging in sand is quick and cheap because it is easy material to move. The moment it gets deep, or runs under a path, a slab or a pool surround, the maths flips hard.
One bad joint in an otherwise sound pipe is a patch liner: half a metre to a couple of metres, at a fraction of a full run. Paying for the full run when a patch would do is the commonest way people overspend on this work, and you can see which you have on the screen.
