Everywhere in Sydney, a storage tank is a slow race between the anode and the cylinder. The anode is a sacrificial rod that corrodes so the steel does not, and when it is gone the tank is on its own.
Within a couple of kilometres of the beach, that race runs faster. Metal in a coastal environment corrodes something like five to ten times faster than the same metal inland, because chloride strips away the protective oxide layer that would otherwise form and halt the process. Nothing about the unit is defective. The air is simply harder on it.
Which is why position matters here more than anywhere. An identical system on an exposed seaward wall and on a sheltered southern side will not last the same length of time, and no manufacturer's warranty distinguishes between them. When we quote a replacement we look at where it is standing, not just what is written on the label.
One thing it is not: hard water. Sydney's supply is soft, averaging around 43 mg/L, so a failed unit here is corrosion, not limescale. If someone quotes you for descaling, get a second opinion.


Tell us the brand, the rough age and which wall it is on. That third answer is the one most plumbers never ask and it is the one that explains the other two.
Copper, steel and galvanised iron all form a thin oxide layer that seals the surface and slows further corrosion. That passive layer is what gives inland pipework its long, boring life.
Chloride ions break it down. Once the layer is compromised the metal underneath has no defence and corrosion continues rather than self-limiting, which is the mechanical reason coastal metal fails five to ten times faster. It is not that the sea is splashing your hot water unit. It is that the air is chemically different.
This is the single most useful thing on this page. Two identical systems installed the same week, one on an exposed seaward or westerly wall and one tucked under an eave on the southern side, will not fail at the same time.
When we assess a unit here we look at exposure first. Sometimes the right answer at changeover is not a different brand, it is the same unit two metres away, in a recess, or with a simple hood over it. That conversation costs nothing and it is worth years.
The sacrificial anode is doing more work in this environment, which means the five to seven year inspection that is merely sensible in western Sydney is genuinely important here.
Checking it is a small job. Replacing it is bigger but far cheaper than a changeover, and on a sound tank it can add years. Almost nobody does it, which is why so many coastal units are replaced earlier than they needed to be.
Coastal corrosion produces perforation rather than rupture. The failure is a pinhole seeping slowly, often for weeks, and it can happen in the pipework as readily as in the unit.
So the warning signs are undramatic: a stain that dries and returns, rust marks around fittings, pressure drifting down over a year or two, a bill creeping up. Those are worth acting on. Waiting for water on the floor means waiting past the cheap fix.
An internal cupboard is better than an exposed wall, but it is not immunity. Salt travels on the air through open windows, vents and the roof space, settles in cavities and under floors, and then holds moisture against whatever is there.
That is why coastal properties see corrosion on pipework nowhere near an external wall. It also means ventilation and keeping a cupboard dry genuinely matter, rather than being generic advice.
Type and size decide most changeovers. On the coast there is a third question that matters as much: how much exposed metal the choice puts on an external wall, and how well protected it will be.
That is not an argument for any particular technology. It is an argument for looking at the position before choosing, and for specifying fittings appropriate to a marine environment rather than whatever comes in the box.

Almost every home here runs one of these eight, and near the water the brand matters less than the position. Rheem, Vulcan and AquaMAX storage tanks are what we mostly find on the older houses, frequently on an external wall with nothing sheltering them.
Rinnai and Bosch continuous flow are common on renovated properties and in the apartments, and a compact wall unit is easier to shelter properly than a cylinder. Dux appears across storage and heat pump, Solahart on roofs, and Stiebel Eltron on heat pump installs where there is somewhere out of the spray to put one.
Elements, thermostats, anodes and tempering valves for the mainstream brands ride on the van, so a repair is usually same day. What we will also do, which most will not, is tell you whether the replacement is going to have the same short life in the same position.

Yes, and this surprises people. Salt does not need contact with seawater to reach your plumbing. It travels on the air through open windows, vents and roof spaces, settles in wall cavities and under floors, and then attracts moisture and keeps those surfaces damp. Damp plus chloride is exactly the condition corrosion needs. An internal cupboard slows things down, it does not stop them.

Usually a seep rather than a flood. Salt-driven corrosion produces pinholes: tiny perforations that weep slowly for weeks or months. So the tells are a stain that keeps coming back, a slow drop in pressure, rust-coloured marks around fittings, or a water bill drifting upward with no change in habits. If you are waiting for a dramatic burst to tell you something is wrong, you will be waiting past the point where it was cheap to fix.
Age decides it more than the fault does. Under about eight years most failures are a single part and worth repairing. Past twelve on a storage tank you are generally looking at a corroded cylinder, which has no repair. Here that window is compressed, so we will give you both numbers honestly and also tell you whether the position of the unit means the replacement will have the same short life unless something changes.
Yes where one suits the property. The NSW Energy Savings Scheme applies an upfront discount to the installer's quote rather than a rebate later: up to $640 replacing an old electric water heater and up to $330 replacing gas, depending on the model. Worth knowing for a coastal install: a heat pump has a fan and a heat exchanger, so siting it out of direct salt spray matters more here than the brochure suggests.
